The Origin

tHE ESSENCE OF FONISSA

"Whatever she had done, then or now, she had done it all for the best"
- The Murderess (Η φόνισσα), Alexandros Papadiamantis

Fonissa is a modern-day homage to the timeless masterpiece Heroine from the classic Greek literature, “Murderess” (Η φόνισσα – The Phonissa) by Skiathian Alexandros Papadiamantis.

The social tale follows the struggles of the protagonist as she attempts to liberate herself in an oppressive society and ultimately find her freedom in the gender inequality of the 19th century. Through her spirited courage and strength of character, she ultimately triumphs over those who have wronged her, proving that women can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Murderess is a testament to the power of female resilience and strength in the face of adversity.

Helmed passionately by a woman, our space at Fonissa celebrates diversity and propels gender equality — a tribute to female characters’ resilience and strength. Fonissa embraces the idea that female empowerment is essential to our society, and we are proud to be part of this movement that drives toward women and gender equality in the future.
